Functional Strength and Conditioning
Copyright 2011 Andrew Adams All Rights Reserved.
The original idea for this website was created my old friend and business partner Dan Welch. Dan
believed that in order to achieve a comprehensive approach to Strength and Conditioning, it would
be appropriate to train the body in occordance with how it had evolved to move, rather than locking
it into the cconfines of static based gym machines that rarely challenge more than one plane of
movement.
Frustrated by the lack of information around at the time, Dan started
www.freestyleperformance.co.uk and through this site, he started to educate visitors on the correct
way of training for Functional Strength and Conditioning.
It seems rather strange now that only a few short years ago, the use of sledgehammers, sleds, kettlebells, tyres
and the like would often draw a lot of criticism from the "so called experts". Yet Dan and Freestyle Performance
were there at the start of the whole Functional training drive, pushing the boundaries in the name of Strength and
Conditioning evolution.
Dan was tragically killed in a car accident in December 2007, but his passion and enthusiasm continue to inspire
those who knew him.
ANDREW ADAMS
I have always been interested in sport and training in particular. I also remember
that my early inspiration to lift weights came after watching Geoff Capes bending
steel bars in the early days of the "Britain's Strongest Man" competition.
As a teenager I was very much into my Rugby and Cricket and it was said that I
might be able to make a career out of playing Cricket. Unfortunately, at the age of
fourteen I suffered a Cerebral Abcess which did serious and permanent damage to
my eyesight, putting an end to any potential career with Cricket, along with my
aspirations of becoming a Physical Training Instructor with the RAF.
Throughout my late teens and early twenties I was really into Bodybuilding and
spent most of my spare time either lifting weights or doing Karate or Boxing.
In 1997, I made the decision to give up my job as an Electrician and pursue a full-time career in Fitness. To this
end, I studied for a Masters Diploma in Fitness training and Sports Therapy and then moved to London where I
worked as a Personal Trainer.
Following a short spell in Healthclub Management both in Dubai and the UK, I decided to concentrate on the Field
of Strength and Conditioning. I now work as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of Exeter and
Lecture in S&C on the Undergraduate Sports Science course.
In addition to all this, I also run Freestyle Performance and love nothing better than helping aspiring young
athletes to maximise their potential, or developing new ideas to enhance my training, or that of those I work with.
